This Is What Cooperative Living Looks Like

When Estoria Lakeville was still under construction, there was a lot we could show prospective members. Floor plans helped people picture their homes, renderings showed what the shared spaces would eventually look like, and conversations about the cooperative model explained how ownership would work. What was much harder to demonstrate was what Lakeville would become once the doors opened and dozens of people began making it their home.

Several months later, Estoria Lakeville has its own personality, shaped by the members who live here and the lives they brought with them. Now we’re able to see the part of Lakeville that could never be planned in advance: the community those members are creating together.

The People Make the Difference

Lakeville members bring decades of experiences, interests and stories with them, and it hasn’t taken long for people to discover how much they have in common. At Lakeville, that has led to Bridge games, book clubs, pickleball and bocce ball matches and dinners together, but it has also led to things no one could have put on a calendar before the community opened. Someone mentions a restaurant they’ve been wanting to try, a concert they’re interested in or a trip they’re considering, and it’s easy to find others who might want to join them.

A Voice in the Community You Own

The sense of ownership at Lakeville goes beyond each member’s individual home. Estoria Lakeville is member-owned and member-governed, so members share ownership of the cooperative and have a voice in decisions that affect the property and its future.

Members elect a board of directors to help guide the cooperative’s policies and direction, and there are other opportunities to contribute ideas and experience along the way. As owners, members have a financial interest in how the property is operated and maintained, along with a voice in decisions that help guide the cooperative.

That combination of individual homeownership and shared ownership of the larger property is one of the things that sets the cooperative model apart from renting.
